Chapter 25

Kimi stayed back far enough from the pickup that she might lose them if they turned off on a side road. She could catch up; they would run out of gas before she did.

Though she was burning up and her eyelids felt like sandpaper scratching across raw nerves every time she blinked, she hadn’t missed the little blond head gazing out the back window of the pickup’s cab. That was Lily, and Kimi wasn’t losing her this time.

Until she discovered Lily’s fellow riders’ intentions, she was staying out of sight. Besides, if the black dog she’d seen poking its head above the tailgate sniffed her out, they would all know she was infected.

When she saw them pull into the old country store with gas pumps out front, she pulled off the road, dismounted, and wheeled the Harley into the foliage. It wasn’t hidden from discerning eyes, but she doubted they would be coming back this way. She’d seen no sign of the creature following her, but it was likely headed their way. Despite its speed, she was still a good forty-five minutes to an hour ahead of it—except for the part of it that was searing holes in her mind. How long before she experienced permanent brain damage?

“You still have enough time left to save Lily, before we’re together forever,” Scottie said.

“Screw you,” she mumbled, and checked and reloaded her weapons. “I’ll never be with you, whatever you are.”

She was saving one bullet for right before the creature took over her mind. She planned on swallowing her Beretta’s barrel and pulling the trigger when the time came. Until then, Lily needed her, and Kimi wasn’t going to fail her.

“You need to rethink that whole suicide thing, honey,” her father said. “You can’t believe how glorious it is being a part of this entity. And I’ve missed you so much. We all have.”

“Bullshit,” Kimi muttered. She swiped a pint of sweat off her face, entered the greenery, and headed toward the country store the back way.

Rainwater dripped off the leaves with a light pattering that disguised her advance. The fragrant scent of loam and honeysuckle cleared her head a bit as she approached the back of a liquor store beside the country store where the pickup was parked.

She crouched and surveyed the scene, and spotted a scraggly teenaged boy working over the underground fuel reserve tanks with a hand-operated pump. A tall bony redheaded man with an old flamethrower strapped to his back walked beside a younger stocky blond with a bloody scrape on his temple. They headed into the liquor store together. Both had pistols in holsters attached to their belts.

The hulking bald man with the bushy black beard swaggering into the country store appeared to be the group’s leader. He carried a pump-action shotgun and looked like he knew how to use it. He and the haggard-looking brunette woman beside him also had pistols holstered at their waists. Lily stood beside the skittish black dog, talking softly to it.
